Overview

Clinical Topics
Mental Health

Mental health is an important part of one’s overall health and well-being. Children’s mental health is strengthened by supportive relationships and environments and can be put at risk by stress and negative experiences. The role of the school nurse is critical to the health and well-being of school communities. They protect, promote, and optimize the health of their students, while sacrificing their own health and well-being. Nurses have experienced significant trauma, while caring for the needs of others and need individual and system level support to remain resilient in the face of these experiences. Various well-being initiatives to reduce stress and maintain a healthy mental space are explored.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this presentation, learners will be able to:

  1. Identify factors that strengthen or place a child’s mental health and well-being at risk
  2. Discuss individual and system-level strategies for promoting the mental health and well-being of nurses
  3. Explore how prioritizing mental health can influence one’s overall health and well-being
